More non-violent offenders to be released from Guyanese prisons

Sixty-five non-violent offenders will be released from prisons in Guyana to reduce overcrowding.

The news was announced by Acting Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels today

The inmates selected for release are near the end of their sentences.

At least 290 inmates at the Lusignan Prison tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) in October.

Some prison officers were also affected.

The prisons have since been cleared of COVID-19.
