The Bahamas: Junkanoo parades postponed amid COVID-19 concerns

All Junkanoo parades in The Bahamas have been postponed indefinitely.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture said the event will not be staged until it is safe to do so.

With over 7348 confirmed cases recorded to date, The Bahamas has been struggling to slow the spread of COVID-19.

According to the Ministry-issued statement, the current climate is not best suited to host the annual Boxing Day and New Year's Day Junkanoo parades which could become super-spreader events.

“The decision to postpone this year’s Junkanoo parades is made out of an abundance of caution."

The government said while the decision to cancel the highly anticipated events was a difficult one, it was made out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the health and safety of all citizens and residents.
