St Kitts: Consumer Affairs investigating price gouging claims

The St Kitts Department of Consumer Affairs is investigating claims that supermarkets are taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic by raising the prices of grocery items including the most basic necessities.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Consumer Affairs Director Paul Queeley said the department is now looking into the reports of price kitts

He said: “From our initial investigations of these claims of price gouging we have seen that many of these complaints in connection to price increases of $1 or $1 and a few cents. Although we do recognise that this is a difficult period for many individuals and every penny counts, it must be highlighted that food prices will fluctuate periodically due to economic forces and supermarkets trying to remain competitive with each other.”

Even so, Queeley urged citizens to report all irregular pricing to the Consumer Affairs Department.
