Private charges laid against GECOM Chair

Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission Claudette Singh is expected to appear before a Georgetown Magistrate on August 5 to answer private criminal charges filed by three citizens.

Keith Ondaan of Linden, Onita Walcott of Victoria and Lorraine Joseph of Melanie East Coast of Demerara have accused Singh of misconduct in public office.

The charges allege Singh acted unlawfully when she refused to accept the Chief Elections Officer’s (CEO) report on the disputed March 2 Regional and General Elections and breached the Recount Order.

These charges come almost a week after CEO Keith Lowenfield appeared before a Georgetown Magistrate to answer fraud charges laid by two private citizens.

He was placed on GYD$450,000 bail.
