Pay attention: Too many road accidents in Sint Maarten

A nine-month overview of traffic accidents in Sint Maarten was conducted and the Sint Maarten Police Force is not happy with the findings.

In fact, it is letting road users know that the roadways are not their own.

The police did a retrospective of the vehicle accidents that took place over the last 9 months on the island.

It found there were more than 600 road accidents registered with the Sint Maarten Police Department between January 1 and September 30, 2020.

This averages out to be about 70 accidents per month.

With this information, it was noted that every day, more than two accidents take place across Sint Maarten and statistics show that many of the common causes of collisions are preventable.

The police say the human factor appears to be the most prevalent contributing factor to road traffic crashes.

This includes driving behaviours such as:

  • Being distracted while driving

  • Speeding

  • Reckless driving and traffic law violations

  • Impaired skills such as fatigue, physical disabilities

The Sint Maarten Police Force is once again cautioning road users to take heed on the roadways to avoid unnecessary collisions.
